What is Scubility?
Scubility is a specialized SDI (Scuba Diving International) program designed to teach, train, and certify individuals with physical disabilities to scuba dive, often using adapted techniques and equipment. It provides therapeutic, confidence-building underwater experiences that allow participants to enjoy weightlessness, often requiring specialized training for instructors and dive buddies to assist.
Key Aspects of Scubility
- Purpose: To empower individuals with disabilities, including veterans, to safely explore the underwater world.
- The Scubility Diver Program: Teaches disabled divers necessary skills to conduct open water dives in conditions similar to their training.
- Adapted Techniques: Focuses on modifying equipment (e.g., buoyancy control, propulsion) to meet specific needs.
- Buddy System: Pairs divers with trained SDI Scubility Buddies who are qualified to assist, especially if the disabled diver cannot perform all tasks independently.
- Therapeutic Value: Offers a sense of freedom and weightlessness that can be physically and psychologically beneficial.
Most courses start with a “Scuba Discovery” pool session to evaluate the diver’s abilities and necessary support levels.
